Why demo trading can't teach you to trade
Demo accounts are for learning buttons and order types. They are not for learning trading. When it's fake money, fear disappears — and fear is half the job. Your first live trade, even ₱100, will teac
The illusion of competence
Demo accounts are useful. They let you learn where the "buy" button is, how to set a stop-loss, what happens when you fat-finger a lot size. But they create a dangerous illusion: that you're learning to trade.
You're not. You're learning to use software.
What demo can't simulate
The difference between demo and live isn't technical. It's emotional.
When you place a trade with fake money:
- You don't feel fear when the price moves against you.
- You don't feel greed when it moves in your favor.
- You don't feel regret when you close early and it keeps running.
- You don't refresh your account balance obsessively.
- You don't lie awake replaying a loss.
All of that shows up the moment real money is on the line — even if it's just ₱100.
The emotional gap is where traders break
You can be profitable on demo for six months straight and still blow your first live account in two weeks. It happens all the time. The strategy didn't fail. The person did — because they'd never trained the part of themselves that demo can't reach.
A concrete example
Imagine you're a Manila-based trader. On demo, you risk $10 per trade (fake dollars). You lose three in a row. You shrug and open the fourth.
Now imagine the same scenario live, but you're risking ₱500 per trade — half a day's budget for groceries. You lose three in a row. That's ₱1,500. Your hand hovers over the fourth trade. You hesitate. You skip it. It wins. Now you're angry.
That sequence — hesitation, skip, regret, anger — never happens on demo. But it's the real curriculum.
The right way to use demo
Demo is for mechanics. Use it to answer questions like:
- How do I set a stop-loss?
- What happens if I close half a position?
- How does my broker calculate margin?
- Can I trail a stop manually, or does the platform do it?
Two to four weeks is enough for that. Once you know where the buttons are and you've placed 20–30 practice trades to build muscle memory, stop.
Go live at the smallest size possible
Most Philippine brokers let you trade micro lots — positions worth ₱50 to ₱200 of risk per trade. Start there.
It won't feel like much. That's the point. You're not trying to make money yet. You're trying to learn how you behave when the outcome matters.
Do you follow your plan, or do you improvise? Do you close early out of fear? Do you revenge-trade after a loss?
You will never learn the answers on demo.
The hard truth
Most retail traders lose money. The majority of that loss comes not from bad strategy, but from emotional mistakes: overtrading, revenge trading, moving stops, cutting winners early, letting losers run.
Demo doesn't prepare you for any of that. Your first live account does.
Treat it like tuition. Keep the position size small enough that a loss stings but doesn't hurt. That's the zone where learning happens.
