Why sessions matter
Forex is a 24-hour market, but it's not a flat hum of constant activity. Volume, volatility, and liquidity rise and fall as financial centers wake up and go to sleep. Understanding the rhythm helps you avoid trading when nothing is happening — or worse, when spreads widen because liquidity has dried up.
The market is commonly divided into four overlapping sessions, named after major financial hubs: Sydney, Tokyo, London, and New York.
The four sessions (in Philippine Time)
Here's when each session opens and closes, adjusted to PHT (UTC+8):
- Sydney: 5:00 AM – 2:00 PM PHT
- Tokyo: 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM PHT
- London: 3:00 PM – 12:00 midnight PHT
- New York: 8:00 PM – 5:00 AM PHT (next day)
Notice the overlaps. Tokyo and London overlap from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. London and New York overlap from 8:00 PM to midnight. That second overlap — London–New York — is the busiest window in the entire 24-hour cycle. Roughly 70% of all forex volume happens when both are open.
Which pairs move in which session
Not all currency pairs are equally active at all times. Here's the rough guide:
- Tokyo session: USD/JPY, AUD/JPY, NZD/USD. Asian pairs and anything involving the yen.
- London session: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, EUR/GBP. The euro and pound wake up here.
- New York session: USD/CAD, and continued heavy flow in EUR/USD and GBP/USD.
- Sydney session: AUD/USD, NZD/USD. Thin overall, but Oceania pairs can move on local data releases.
If you're trading EUR/USD at 9:00 AM Manila time, you're in the tail end of Sydney and early Tokyo — Europe is asleep. The pair might drift 10–15 pips all morning. But come 8:00 PM, when London and New York overlap, that same pair can move 50 pips in an hour.
Practical advice for Philippine-based traders
If you work a typical 9-to-5 and get home around 7:00 PM, you're actually in a good time zone for part-time trading. The London–New York overlap starts at 8:00 PM. That's prime time.
If you're awake during Tokyo hours (morning to mid-afternoon), focus on yen pairs or AUD/NZD crosses. Don't force a EUR/USD trade at 10:00 AM and wonder why nothing's happening.
If you're a night owl or graveyard-shift worker, you have access to New York's second half and the quiet handoff into Sydney. Liquidity thins out after midnight PHT, but economic news from the U.S. (non-farm payrolls, Fed statements) often drops between 8:30 PM and 10:00 PM Manila time — right in that overlap.
The quiet periods
The slowest time globally is the gap between New York's close and Tokyo's open — roughly 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM PHT. Spreads widen. Prices can be erratic on low volume. Unless you have a specific reason (like holding a swing trade through the rollover), there's little edge in trading that window.
