What is a currency pair?
A currency pair is how forex prices are quoted. EUR/USD = 1.0850 means one euro buys 1.0850 US dollars. The first currency (EUR) is the base. The second (USD) is the quote. When the pair rises, the ba
The basic unit of forex
In forex, prices aren't quoted for a single currency. You can't just "buy euros" the way you buy a stock. Instead, you trade a currency pair — two currencies quoted as a ratio.
The format looks like this: EUR/USD = 1.0850.
That number means: one euro buys 1.0850 US dollars.
Base and quote
Every pair has two parts:
- Base currency — the first one (EUR in EUR/USD). This is what you're "buying" or "selling."
- Quote currency — the second one (USD in EUR/USD). This is what you're paying with, or receiving.
The price tells you how many units of the quote currency equal one unit of the base.
A local example: USD/PHP
Let's use a pair Filipinos see every day.
USD/PHP = 56.50 means one US dollar buys 56.50 Philippine pesos.
If that number rises to 57.00, the dollar has strengthened against the peso. You need more pesos to buy the same dollar.
If it falls to 56.00, the peso has strengthened. You need fewer pesos per dollar.
Direction is always relative
This is the part that trips up beginners: when a pair goes up, the base currency is getting stronger relative to the quote. When it goes down, the quote is getting stronger.
- EUR/USD rising = euro strengthening against the dollar.
- EUR/USD falling = dollar strengthening against the euro.
You're never betting on just one currency. You're betting on the gap between two.
Why this matters
Because forex is always relative, a "strong dollar" doesn't mean the dollar is strong everywhere. It might be strong against the peso but weak against the yen. That's why traders talk in pairs, not currencies.
When you open a trade, you're not just bullish on one currency. You're bullish on one and bearish on the other — at the same time.
The two you'll see most
- EUR/USD — the most liquid pair in the world. Called "fiber" by some traders.
- USD/PHP — the pair that determines OFW remittance value, import costs, and every cross-border payment a Filipino business makes.
Both follow the same logic. Base on the left. Quote on the right. The number is the exchange rate.
